The Broadway revival of D.L. Coburn’s The Gin Game, starring Tony winners James Earl Jones and Cicely Tyson, will begin earlier than previously announced. Preview performances will start on September 18 (instead of September 21). Opening night is still set for October 13 at the Golden Theatre.
The production, which will be directed by Leonard Foglia, will feature sets and costumes by Riccardo Hernandez, lighting design by Jules Fisher and Peggy Eisenhauer and sound design by David Van Tieghem.
The Pulitzer Prize-winning play follows Weller Martin (Jones) and Fonsia Dorsey (Tyson), who meet on the porch of their nursing home and strike up a friendship as Weller teaches Fonsia how to play gin rummy. As they play, they share stories about the lives they led in the outside world. But when Fonsia wins every hand, Weller becomes increasingly frustrated. Soon, their gin games and conversations become a battleground, with each player exposing the other’s failures, disappointments and insecurities.
